Russell six snatches historic super over win for United

SHARJAH March 2: HBL Pakistan Super League (PSL) witnessed another heart stopping thriller as Andre Russell’s last ball six in the first ever Super Over in the league’s history gave Islamabad United two valuable points against Lahore Qalandars.

Chasing 122 for an outright win Qalandars middle-order caved in for the fourth consecutive time in as many games, from a score of 77 for two, the Qalandars crashed to 121 all out when last man Salman Irshad was dismissed by Man-of-the-Match Mohammad Sami on the fourth ball of the final over.

Before his dismissal Salman had brought alive Qalandar’s fans with a six which tied the scores.

Agha Salman scored 48 while McCullum held the innings together before falling run out in the last over just a ball before Salman’s heroics.

Batting first in the Super Over, Qalandars scored 16 runs off Sami losing McCullum’s wicket in the process.

United than pulled off the win as Russell deposited Mustafizur Rahman over the long-on boundary causing delirium in United’s camp.

The heartbreaking loss left Qalandars with four losses in as many games at the bottom of the six team points table.

United now have four points in as many games courtesy their wins against Multan Sultans and Qalandars.

Earlier, United struggled to cope with tricky batting conditions following intermittent rain that had forced the abandonment of the opening clash of the day between Karachi Kings and Sultans.

Lahore strangled the opponents from the outset as Fakhar Zaman who was surprisingly asked to open the attack accounted for Luke Ronchi for a duck in the first over of the match.

Sahibzada Farhan also fell cheaply while United suffered a big blow when rookie pacer Salman accounted for captain Misbahul Haq on the first ball of his HBL PSL career.

JP. Duminy anchored the United batting effort with a resolute 34 off 36 balls. The left-hander found scant support at the other end as wickets kept tumbling.

Yasir Shah was the wrecker-in-chief taking three wickets conceding a mere 20 runs in his four over spell, Sohail Khan took two wickets.

United owed their eventual 121 run total to cameos from Hussain Talat and Andre Russell, the West Indian was run out after a misunderstanding with Hussain as both batsmen were left stranded at the batting end.

At half way stage Qalandars were the favourites to win despite their winless record in the tournament todate.
