Ruthless Ronchi leads United’s Qalandar thrashing

Dubai March 8: Opener Luke Ronchi blazed away posting a second successive match winning innings as former champions Islamabad United leapt frogged to the number two spot in the HBL Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2018 standings with a six wicket thrashing of the luckless wooden spooners Lahore Qalandars.

The defeat was the sixth successive one for Lahore and only a miraculous turnaround and some divine intervention can see them through the Play-off stage of the tournament.

Set a 164 run target after opting to field first, United coasted home through the belligerence of Ronchi who scored 77 off 41 balls with the help of as many as six sixes as the chase was completed in the 18th over.

Ronchi was ably supported by JP Duminy at the top of the order while all-rounder Shadab Khan played his pinch-hitter role adequately scoring a stroke filled 32 to ensure a smooth sail for the United team.

Ronchi was duly rewarded for his outstanding batting as the opener won his second successive Man-of-the-Match award.

Earlier, Qalandars made a better end to their customary flying start in the tournament as McCullum scored a quikfire 12 ball 33 to take the total to 163 for 8.

The Lahore side would have hoped for a better score at the halfway stage as they reached 94 for one at the completion of the 10th over.

But the innings subsided limply before the McCullum flourish as Denesh Ramdin struggled for a 20 ball 9 run innings.

The start was bright and breezy for the Qalandars as newcomer Anton Devcich scored 62 off 42 balls, the first ever 50 for a Lahore batsman in the ongoing season.

Fakhar Zaman scored 33 runs in a 56 run opening stand with Devcich.

Qalandars owed their eventual score to McCullum who took the United bowlers to the cleaners in the final three overs of the innings ensuring a formidable total for the bottom ranked team of the third edition.
